Thursday Fight Night: Halo ODST vs Republic Commando Part 1

Welcome to Thursday Fight Night where I compare two factions from different franchises and talk about their advantages and disadvantages!

For the next 2 posts, I want to pit two iconic science fiction/ pop culture series against each other: Star Wars vs Halo.

What makes these two franchises memorable aside from story?

LARGE SCALE BATTLES!

Whether it's the Battle of Geonosis or the Battle of Mombasa, gamers are immersed into participating in recreations of popular science fiction battles where enemy intensity is high and health packs are low.

Our contenders are the UNSC's Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST) vs the GAR's Clone Commandos!

Both are special forces units that enter behind enemy lines, sabotage enemy armament, and use an array of exclusive weaponry to get the job done. While main characters like Master Chief and Anakin Skywalker are in the front lines, ODSTs and Clone Commandos do their best work away from the spotlight.

If it weren't for these two groups participating in these monumental battles, their respective armies would have suffered utter defeat at the hands of their enemies.

Part 1: Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODST)

A squad of ODSTs (Left to Right: Rookie, Dutch, Mickey, Dare, Buck, and Romeo)

Once used to quash insurrections on colony worlds, Orbital Drop Shock Troopers fall into action, helping UNSC forces against the Elites, Grunts, Jackals, and Brutes of the Covenant wherever they can. Receiving extra training more intense than the average UNSC marine, the ODSTs learn how to pilot vehicles, hack into databases, conduct covert operations, and assassinate/ protect high value targets.

M7S Caseless Submachine Gun (Standard Issue ODST firearm)
Usually armed with a set of suppressed firearms for covert missions, ODST squads don't shy away from using explosives and loud weapons like rocket launchers and SPARTAN lasers to get the job done. Additional to their training, individuals learn how to utilize enemy weapons should they run out of ammunition.

M6C/SOCOM (Standard Issue ODST sidearm)

Most ODST squads consists of 4 members, two or three with the same weapons kit while one wields a special weapons. However, ODST flexibility allows individuals to carry other weapons outside of their standard issue kit regardless of battle scenarios (i.e. a rocket launcher for a sneaking mission is a bit much, but you never know when one would need it).

What makes ODSTs stand out is their insertion method: Drop Pods.

The Single Occupant Exoatmospheric Insertion Vehicle allows the occupant to drop into enemy lines, possibly eliminating nearby enemies, without injuring the individual ODST. Similar to supply drops, they can be dropped in the air or from space. Whether it's day or night, the pods can pass as comets or debris, confusing most Covenant forces.

An ODST almost sinks with his pod (also pictured: a helpful Spartan)
Although ODSTs have conducted successful missions throughout the HALO series, they are not invincible. There are instances where a change of course can cause drop pods combust before breaking through a world's atmosphere, individuals can drown in their pods due to its heavy weight, and their armor doesn't offer much protection against most energy-based weapons (the Covenant's specialty to use against the UNSC of course!).

Despite these weaknesses, ODSTs are an awesome part of the HALO universe that provides extra lore to the expanding story and shows people that you don't need to rely on Spartan super soldiers to win against the Covenant.

Thank you for tuning in! Be sure to watch out for the part 2, where we will discuss Star Wars' Clone Commandos!
